Early Winter Tapes

FAX 029: Laura Warholic - “what comes before the word??” C26

Laura Warholic, AKA Merv Glisten (one half of gloom-pop dynamo, Angels in America), brings us a bizarre, otherworldly dictation of click-clack static, sickly ditties, and cautionary spoken word. Recorded over the course of two years, and with landmark results, I am incredibly proud to be releasing this thoughtful and captivating collection of songs. Edition of 50.

FAX 028: Noise Nomads - “Menacing Bells” C30

The swamp hag lifts himself out of the mire for another screeching, swirling onslaught of harsh owl howl, bowls and sticks turned into tools of oppression. Is that the door? Is it...? Edition of 100.

Both available now from Faux-Pas Recordings.

Sam Gas Can - "Life On Earth..." C-24

My new cassette, “Life on Earth is Pure and Golden, Life on Earth is Hell on Earth”, is now available for purchase from Lighten Up Sounds. Edition of 50, so get one quick!

From the label:

"If you are afraid of sounds that sound like sounds, please go home. Packing a respectable ten songs into 24 minutes, Mass-hole underground beatnik Sam Gas Can returns with a series of blown sessions ranging broadly from pseudo-techno bedroom lounge vibes to lonely and depressive acoustic murder ballads. Essential groove organ cookers via vintage keyboard pre-programmed tones sauced with a subdued but consistent sense of bummer lyricism and steadily skewed vox delivery. Hollering against howling winds, calling out into the future of the outsider-pop wasteland. Features several undeniable instant classics. Schmaltzy sleeper groove ballad drooler “Night Moves” will soften the hardest of hearts and the completely over the top “No One To Watch Over Me” hits a homer as a Vegas nightclub show closer including a full on dubbed up orchestra climax. Dang, pipe dream radio. Real time duplicated clear shell cassette with bright yellow printed labels comes packaged with a double-sided full color card stock J-card featuring an evocative back-of-the-head self-portrait photo shot by Sam himself, and a Horoscope insert. Sleep if you will, suckers."

And if you missed them before, some more sound samples.

Rose and Elaine

The inimitable Rose Mackey commissioned me to make this drawing of her and Elaine Kahn in exchange for a pie as a "going-away" gift. Rose is a brilliant filmmaker, more recently directing the music video for Thurston Moore's "Circulation", and Elaine makes excellently eerie music under the name Horsebladder.

Cave Bears in the Village Voice

Check out this article about the Cave Bears in the Village Voice, I took the photo (enlarged version above)! It's from a show we both played at Port d'Or in Brooklyn on New Year's Eve, and was absolutely one of my favorite sets I've ever seen them play. It included them throwing tapes completely covered in Vaseline at the audience, rapping over a Bob Marley cassette, and closing with a Les Rallizes Dénudés cover. Needless to say, it was a fun night.

UPDATE 8/8: Free Music Archive does a follow-up article.

"2012" notebook

I don't generally post process pages on this blog, but the density and manic quality of this spread seemed kind of interesting to me, so I thought I'd throw it up for the hell of it, all notes and thumbnails from my newest comic book, "2012".

Post-Materialists cassette

Check out the cover design I did for this new cassette by the Post-Materialists, out now on Eggy Records! So sayeth Eggy:

"The world is a big place and Russia is long way away. Post-Materialists hail from Moscow and their style of fringe music is as far removed from what I'm used to as their location is removed from me geographically. I dig how "classically weird" they sound -- no reverb, very little delay, relatively clean recordings, lots of backwards sounds and an emphasis on odd textures, plain and simple. So if you're concerned about whether the music you listen to sounds "cool" or not, you can skip this one. For real. But if you're ok with things being playful and a little odd, you will get some enjoyment out of this tape. It's definitely out of the ordinary. The singing is in Russian!"

You can grab a copy from their official mail order zone.

Remember all those weird green pages that have appeared intermittently on this blog? Well, those and some unseen others have been collected into an oversized 28-page comic book, premiering at the Toronto Comics Art Festival this weekend, courtesy of Secret Acres. Put simply, it is the true story of the end of humanity as we know it, the impending end times, and the world that exists thereafter (featuring Dracula and Jackie Chan). There will be extremely limited quantities at the convention, so if you're going, get at it quick (I'll be there too!), but it should be printed in a full run soon after to be found in all the regular comics haunts.
